11/27/2021 Bellevue vs Liberty 10-17-19Bellevue 0-1 Liberty
I should simply cut/paste the game recap paragraph from previous posts: played well, didn't give up many chances, then gave up a late frustrating goal. The particular flavor of frustration at Liberty was that with 10 minutes left in the game, a game that ebbed and flowed and was very competitive, the final result was decided by a terrible free kick. Actually, a terrible free kick decision...that was unfortunately (for us) paired with one of the best free kicks I have witnessed in my four years of high school girls soccer. Yes, Liberty's senior forward scored a sublime goal and kudos to her for her upper upper corner smash, but it was from a free kick that wasn't a free kick (I watched the video). Yes, that's part of our game. No referee is perfect. We know that. But we'd prefer that human imperfection leaned more to the occasional poor throw-in decision, and not a phantom free kick 25 yards from our goal in a very tight game. So be it. But it stings. And to be fair to Liberty (they are a very good team), they created more chances than we did on the night, but not many more, and not many that had us overly concerned (until we witnessed a thunderball free kick that painted two posts). Our collective feelings about this season will be significantly shaped by how we perform in our last four regular season games. We have Newport (tomorrow), Juanita, Sammamish and Mercer Island. We continue to control our destiny, but the tight-rope is fraying, and we need every last amount of effort, will, skill and team-first commitment we can get from our girls in our last two weeks of the regular season. I know that we have the aptitude, now we have to determine if we have the attitude. Comments are closed.
